Art in Altos de Chavón

An unavoidable visit in the Dominican Republic is the town of Altos de Chavón, in La Romana, a replica of a 16th century Italian-Spanish town with its cobbled streets and buildings built with blocks of coral stone and terracotta.

It receives thousands of visitors every day, becoming one of the favorite attractions in Punta Cana.

Altos de Chavón - with beautiful views over the river of the same name and the Caribbean Sea - is a cultural center that houses artistic workshops (pottery, weaving, serigraphy), shops, art galleries, a renowned design school (affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York), an archaeological museum on the history of the area, the Church of San Estanislao and a large Greek-style amphitheater with a capacity for 5,000 people.

Also known as the "City of Artists", it has become a cultural center of the region. It is a meeting point for different types of art. You can find artist studios, craft workshops and art galleries. Students from Altos de Chavón exhibit their works at the Parsons School in New York.

The church of San Estanislao, located in the central square of the Altos de Chavón, is one of the most photographed monuments in the complex. Its neoclassical doorway stands out, as well as a small rose window and a belfry with two bells that can be reached through an external staircase.
